Royal New Zealand Navy Band - Great Night Out: 2 February 2011

The Navy Band concert at the Kerikeri Centre during Waitangi Week was a full-to- capacity event which raised over $4000 toward Project Promise. This is the planned new oncology Unit to be built alongside Whangarei Base Hospital for the use of all Northlanders.

Thank you to the Centre for sponsoring the event so generously, and the great Navy Band for its rousing music and a very entertaining evening!

2009 Joint Area 1 meeting coincides with Zone Institute conference at Waitangi - 19 November 2009

After an opening jazz number played to us by KKHS student Bryn van Fliet, Assistant District Governor Keith Day welcomed Rotarians from all five northern clubs, Kaitaia, Kaikohe, Kerikeri, Waipapa and the Bay of Islands to our annual joint meeting. But this year the meeting was enriched by the presence of Rotary international and New Zealand-wide governors, RID John Lawrence, a Rotary Foundation trustee Mr. John Germ, Rotary Past International president Bill Boyd and his wife Lorna, and Rotary International President Elect Mr Ray Klinginsmith and his wife Judie.

Early on in the evening DG Georges Giovannelli surprised local Kaitaia journalist Peter Jackson with a Rotary award for his outstanding services to the community over many years in developing a thriving local newspaper, the Northland Age, which has survived the demise of many similar local rags. Peter Jackson was moved and humbled by received this Paul Harris Fellowship.

Dinner was enjoyed by over 190 guests, ably catered for by the RSA 'Razza' staff on Cobham Road, Kerikeri. Thanks to Brian Devlin and Carole Flowers of Makana chocolates for the stylish gift box of chocolate truffles at every seat, and Rod & Shona St. George of Kapiro Road Orchids for the beautiful orchids that were used to prepare sprays for all the ladies.

RID John Lawrence introduced Rotary International President Elect Ray Kinginsmith who spoke to all about our shared mission to foster worldwide fellowship, dispel violence and prejudice, alleviate poverty and disease through education and provision of basic humanitarian needs to all. He reminded us that a hungry man is usually an angry man, that poverty invites rescue. How can humanity allow the existence of the sprawling slums of Kabira where over a million people live in squalor? How can there be only one hospital proving cancer therapy to children in Zululand where children have to share a bed to receive treatment? Mr. Klinginsmith will encourage more travel from the first world Rotarians to these areas as seeing the realities is a very powerful motivator to then making a difference. The role of Rotary could move to more advocacy with governments about alleviating poverty, health issues, etc. Rotary can encourage these governments to do the right thing.

The evening was capped off with a special annual District award acknowledging huge service to The Rotary Foundation in disbursing its funds to worthy projects throughout the District. TRF Trustee Mr. John Germ presented PDG Merv Huxford with this award. For example Merv has been instrumental in providing the Kerikeri Rotary Clubs funding for the Town Basin Picnic area and the Motuti Carving Centre Matching grant project.

The evening was special, mixing with all the visiting 'Rotary Brass' a privilege. A splendid and uplifting Rotary meeting was greatly enjoyed by all.
